lockon2urheart: (but they can't stop the spring)

It’s sunny and warm, and the field of tall, swaying grass is almost without boundries. Lockon is walking slowly through it, feeling peaceful and contented.

As he moves, he hears laughter. He gets follows it, getting closer, and the wide grass opens into a clearing of clover and wildflowers, shaded by a large tree.

Haruhi, Feldt, Nill and a young brown-haired girl of around 10 are sitting in a circle a little way away and off to the right. They’re laughing, it’s them that he heard, all four of them – and they’re playing, rolling Haro to each other across the carpet of flowers. He smiles at the sight, moving closer – Haro notices him and flaps his ears happily, but the sound he makes is something akin to a puppy’s bark rather than his usual speech. The girls all turn to look at him. Haruhi and the young girl’s smiles are wide and joyful, Feldt’s and Nill’s are more shy and quietly happy.

“Oniichan!” chirps Haruhi, and the other three join in (Lockon, Lockon, Neil) although Nill uses sign language (which he can easily translate in the dream despite having no clue in real life).

“Are you here to join in?” Feldt asks.

“Neil, Neil, come play with us!” cries the brown-haired girl, clapping her hands excitedly. Lockon, however, shakes his head.

“I can’t. I’ve got something to do. I’ll play with you guys later, okay?”

The brown-haired girl looks heartbroken, while the other three look disappointed.

“I’m sure it’s important,” says Feldt quietly.

“I’ll come back,” he promises, “I’ll play later.” But the girls have already started up their game again without him. He watches silently for a moment, then he moves on through the clearing as the laughter starts up again behind him.

A little way away, he comes across another group – Setsuna, Allelujah and a small boy of around 14 playing cards. To anyone who saw Lockon during physical regression virus, the boy would probably look very familiar.

“Got any aces?” the boy asks Setsuna.

“Shut up, I am Gundam.”

“That’s a yeah, isn’t it?”

Allelujah looks up as Lockon gets closer and smiles brightly. “Now we have enough players for a game,” he hums, pulling out a Monopoly box.

“I can’t. I’ve got something I need to do first.”

The boy tilts his head to one side. “Didn’t you already do that, Neil?”

“No,” Lockon says distantly, “no, I’m not finished yet.”

“Be careful,” says Setsuna without looking up from his cards.

Allelujah looks a little disappointed, but nods and sits down beside the other two. He picks up a fan of cards. “If you need help you know where to find us. Come play the game when you’re done.”

“Don’t be gone so long this time, okay?” The boy smiles up at Lockon.

“Yeah. I’ll be back soon, don’t worry. I just need to do this first. It’s important.” They return to their game (”Got any threes?” “There is no three in this deck.”) and he moves off, towards the large tree in the centre of the field. He leans back against it on reaching it, surveying the clearing. It’s peaceful. There’s something he should be doing. Something really big and important. But this is…he can stay like this for a little while. Just letting the sound of the people in the clearing wash over him. Just peace.

“Someone looks happy,” grins the Doctor cheerfully from next to him, standing with his hands in his pockets.

“It’s nice,” laughs Lockon. “Family life.”
