Heh, in a way. The orbital elevators are actually part of the world's solar energy system. There's two currently in operation, one here in the Union and another in the HRL, not including the one being built by the AEU that's still under construction. The elevators are connected to the ring of solar power satellites around the Earth, and they transmit the power generated back down here. That's not what most people use them for, though, they're really more of a way for civilians to get to experience space. Trains run up and down them to the satellite, and anyone can buy a ticket to go up there. Schools run trips into space using them.
